Why scanners confuse Metal cards with standard ones

A camera sees almost the same card, and the printed collector number can match the standard card’s. Name, number and artwork alone may not settle it, so RIFT SCAN shows a chooser when a standard card and its Metal promo both fit, instead of guessing. If you have a valuable promo, confirm the printing against its card page before relying on a scan. The wider problem is covered in what to do when the scanner picks the wrong card.

How to check a card is Metal

  1. Check the set code in the collector line: Metal promos in the catalog are in the OPP set.
  2. Handle the card: a Metal promo is physically different from a standard paper card, so weight and finish give it away.
  3. Find the card on its page and compare every printing; the Metal one is labelled “(Metal)”.
  4. Choose the matching printing in the scanner’s chooser and confirm the price is in the Metal price range, not the standard card’s.

Where Metal cards fit in the OPP set

The Organized Play promo set mixes Metal cards with other promotional printings. See the promo sets guide for every promo set and what is in it, and Organized Play Promotional Cards for the complete card list. Metal is one of four variant types; the others are alternate art, signature and overnumbered cards.

How these numbers are calculated

Every figure on this page is calculated when the site is built, from the public RiftHunt card catalog and the daily TCGplayer price estimates published through the RiftHunt API. A printing’s headline price is its normal market price, otherwise its foil market price, otherwise its lowest listing. Medians are used instead of averages so a few expensive cards do not distort the result. Prices are estimates for typical copies, not offers to buy or sell.
