Riftbound card variants & finishes explained: foil, alternate art, signature, overnumbered and Metal
Why two Riftbound cards with the same name can have very different prices: normal vs foil, alternate art, signature, overnumbered and Metal printings explained.
Riftbound has 1,702 printings across 10 sets and promo sets in the card catalog. Many of them share a name, so a Riftbound price check only means something if you identify the exact printing and finish. Here is what the labels mean.
Normal vs foil
TCGplayer lists normal and foil as separate products, and so does the price data this site uses. The two can differ by orders of magnitude. RIFT SCAN shows each finish on its own and never prices a foil with a normal price. A camera cannot see the finish, so you choose it with the Normal / Foil toggle.
Alternate art (126 printings)
Alternate-art printings reuse a card with different artwork and a number carrying a letter suffix, for example 007a. They are their own products with their own prices.
Signature (50 printings)
Signature printings carry an artist signature and are priced separately from the standard card. Many of the highest prices in the feed are signature or Metal printings, which you can see live in the highest market prices list.
Overnumbered (88 printings)
Overnumbered cards are numbered beyond the printed set size (for example 299/298 in a 298-card set).
Metal promos (28 printings)
Metal promos share their collector number with the standard card, so even the number cannot tell them apart. They are separate TCGplayer products and can be worth far more. When a scan cannot separate a standard card from its Metal promo, RIFT SCAN shows a chooser instead of guessing.
How to tell them apart
- Read the set code and collector number at the bottom of the card, including any letter suffix.
- Compare the artwork with the card page, which lists every printing of the card.
- Check the finish (foil shimmer) and pick Normal or Foil to see that price.
