What makes a card “alternate art”

An alternate-art printing re-uses a card’s name and rules but changes the artwork. It keeps the base card’s number and adds a letter after it, so card 066 becomes 066a. On TCGplayer it is a separate product with its own price, and the catalog labels it “(Alternate Art)” after the name. The catalog holds 126 alternate-art printings out of 1,702 in total.

How to recognise one

  1. Read the collector line in the bottom-left corner and look for a letter after the number.
  2. Compare the artwork with the standard card on its card page, which lists every printing.
  3. Check the set code. Alternate-art cards sit in the same set as their standard card.

Not sure how to read the line? Reading the set code and number covers it, and the scanner offers a chooser when it cannot tell two printings apart. Signature cards, the next step up, are covered in Riftbound signature cards.

How these numbers are calculated

Every figure on this page is calculated when the site is built, from the public RiftHunt card catalog and the daily TCGplayer price estimates published through the RiftHunt API. A printing’s headline price is its normal market price, otherwise its foil market price, otherwise its lowest listing. Medians are used instead of averages so a few expensive cards do not distort the result. Prices are estimates for typical copies, not offers to buy or sell. RIFT SCAN is an unofficial fan project; see about RIFT SCAN, or look up any card in the set lists.

Common questions

How can I tell an alternate-art Riftbound card from the standard one?

Look for a letter after the collector number, such as 066a, and compare the artwork with the standard card on its card page. The catalog also labels the name with “(Alternate Art)”.

How many alternate-art Riftbound cards are there?

The catalog lists 126 alternate-art printings out of 1,702, across 7 sets.

Are alternate-art cards the same as signature cards?

No. A signature card carries an artist’s signature and is numbered beyond the set size; an alternate-art card re-uses the standard number with a letter.
