The foil premium in numbers

RIFT SCAN compares the TCGplayer market price of the foil and normal version of the same printing. As of 26 October 2026, 609 printings have a market price for both. For each one, the foil price is divided by the normal price, and the median of those ratios is 3.3×. In 5 printings the foil is actually cheaper than the normal.

Why a ratio is better than an average

Averages are pulled around by a handful of expensive cards, so the median is used here. It is the middle result: half of printings have a bigger foil premium and half a smaller one. Many cheap cards show a large ratio because the normal copy costs only a few cents, while on expensive cards the difference in dollars matters more than the multiple.

What this means in practice

  • Never use a normal price for a foil or the reverse. A camera cannot tell the finish, so pick it yourself on the result.
  • When valuing a binder, record the finish of every card; one foil marked as normal can understate the total noticeably.
  • For cheap cards a foil is often a small amount of money in absolute terms, even when the multiple looks dramatic.
  • The premium is a snapshot: it moves as stock and demand change, so check again before a large trade.

Foil is only one reason prices diverge. Printings such as alternate art, signature and Metal cards are separate products altogether; see variant price premiums. For scanning tips specific to foils read how to scan foil cards.

How these numbers are calculated

Every figure on this page is calculated when the site is built, from the public RiftHunt card catalog and the daily TCGplayer price estimates published through the RiftHunt API. A printing’s headline price is its normal market price, otherwise its foil market price, otherwise its lowest listing. Medians are used instead of averages so a few expensive cards do not distort the result. Prices are estimates for typical copies, not offers to buy or sell. RIFT SCAN is an unofficial fan project; see about RIFT SCAN, or look up any card in the set lists.

Common questions

How much more is a foil Riftbound card worth?

As of 26 October 2026, the median foil has a market price 3.3 times its normal version across 609 printings with both prices. The spread is wide, and in 5 printings the foil is cheaper.

Is a foil always worth more than the normal card?

No. In 5 of 609 compared printings the foil’s market price is lower than the normal one, usually because of differing supply and demand. Always look up the exact finish you hold.

Do variants such as alternate art come in foil too?

Finish and variant are separate: a variant can have its own normal and foil prices. See variant price premiums for how the variants compare with the standard card.
